We all know that the cornerstone of hip-hop music started on
the East Coast in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City in the 70s. From then
own it seems like each region of the United States has seen its presence in
hip-hop.
The west coast ran the late 80s
and early 90s. During the mid-90s the East Coast vs. West Coast beef had a
major impact on hip-hop which resulted in the murders of East coast great The
Notorious BIG and 2 Pac two of the best artist to ever do it. Even during the mid to late 90s the Mid West
had its affect on hip-hop. As the 20th
century came to a close the South began to make a push in hip-hop.
The South has always had an impact on music with genres like
Jazz, Blues and Rhythm and Blues. As the new decade was approaching the South
was quickly rising to the top of hip-hop. With artist such as Scarface, Master
P, Outkast, Goodie Mobb, Trick Daddy, T.I., and Ludacris the south was a region
in hip-hop that no other region prior could compete with.
To this day no other hip-hop group has seen the success like
Cash Money. Hitting the hip-hop main stream in the late 90s with the hit single
“Back That Azz Up” by Juvenile, Cash Money seemed to be well on its way. Almost
15 years later and with Lil Wayne one of the original members still making
hits. Self claimed “The Best Rapper Alive” and arguably one of the best in the
game today, Lil Wayne has kept Cash Money at the top of hip-hop and created a
label of this own Young Money that looks to be following in the footsteps of
Cash Money.
Recently Lil Wayne signed another four-album deal with Cash
Money. His recent album The Carter IV was released in the summer of 2011 has
sold 3.5 million copies. Lil Wayne states, ,
“Contract-wise, I only get paid for 12 songs. Maybe on a Carter album, you probably only gonna get 12 songs,
maybe a bonus 13,” The YMCMB camp has set themselves up for longevity in this
game we call hip-hop.
